THE EXPERIENCE SALTWATER CHARTERS

PRINCE RUPERT, BC
A British Columbia Salmon and Halibut Fishing Charter

Home

This is our latest. A "blog" of sorts. We wanted to have a place within our own site where we can talk about our Experiences and our adventures and basically just keep everyone up to date on the goings on in the fishing world here in Prince Rupert, BC.  I hope you all enjoy reading the stories and I think that I will keep a new blog page for every year. After all, fishing is my passion and my favorite subject to talk about! :)

I have been meaning to start up this page for awhile now and have just decided that it is time to begin. I would like to keep a journal of sorts to publish how my season is going. Pictures updated each week in the photo gallery is one way of doing that but I would like to write a little something as often as I can as well. So here is my first posting.

We began in early May with a great bunch of guys. They were a lot of fun and I am looking forward to having them back on the boat again. We had a 3 day trip that was definitely an adventure.

Our next couple of trips were interesting as well and I was getting a little concerned by the fourth trip because the salmon were having a later than usual run. Oh we were catching them but not like we normally do. Nobody really was. A few boats every so often with a few fish but it was spotty. Well I didn't have to worry because the fourth group I took out did not want to concern themselves with salmon. They wanted ground fish and man! did we clean up.

We caught a 94 lb halibut and a 45lb ling among a huge pile of other fish. Check out the pics in the photo gallery. The top picture is the son with his very large fish. What a blast that family was and I am very excited that they will come out with me again and we can go for the gusto one more time.

Signing off at this point and will catch up next time.

Wow! What a great time. over the last 3 days we have caught 12 Chinook, 4 of them being tyee (over 30lbs)! We also got 47 Halibut, 7 ling and 13 rock fish! Of course we couldn't keep them all but we had an excellent time catching them. One of our halibut was 121lbs! the rest of those we kept were 20-45lbs. I am having such a great time out here on the ocean.

Can't wait to get the new pics up on the website of my last  trip.

What an amazing day we had today! Our clients were most interested in catching halibut and did we ever catch a ton of them! One of the most exciting parts of our day was the 130lb halibut that we caught.....twice! The first time we caught him he pulled down so hard that we broke the leader and he went free. I laughed and said "Don't worry, he will be back." Well he came back alright. And this time we landed him, with the leader and hook in his mouth still from the last time we hooked him! What a great feeling. We also caught a couple in the 50lb range among others. Another great day was had by all. I have the best job in the world.

We have been very busy out on the water. We had one day where the wind blew so hard that we couldn't make it out. Man was I disappointed. But then we had a great charter where we caught a 165lb halibut! I love catching those monsters! I am adding the pictures here on the postings so that you can see each one.

We had an awesome couple of days! I had a group from Ft McMurray come out for a 2 day trip. On day 1 we caught so many halibut that we kept ten of them and let around 50 go. talk about being on the rod all day long. On day 2 we had an insane salmon day. After a tough year on Chinook, we managed to bring 6 in to the boat. There was a 34lb, 28lb, 26lb, and 22lb among them. With all the Coho in the area as well we managed to limit out on the salmon by 3pm.

I am having some pretty darn good luck on the big halibut this year! This trip was a great group of guys from Edmonton. We landed 7 halibut and released 30. One of them though, was a 77 pounder. Also managed to get 12 salmon and a 30lb ling cod. What a trip!

I absolutely HAD to put this post in here because the group I had on my boat for this trip chose to come with us because of our blog! That was excellent. It really made me feel good to know that people do read my stories. Henry, Kevin, Rick, and Michael were definitely among the nicest people I have ever had on my boat. They have been on several charters before but never caught fish like this. We kept 10 halibut with a 46lb, 57lb, and 64lb among them. We even released 20+ more. I am not sure Henry realized how heavy that is for a fish! :) They went out the next day and caught their limit in salmon by noon. We really enjoyed having these guys on out boat and look forward to fishing with them again in the future.

We had another excellent trip with a group of 9 people from Edmonton. We went on two boats and had a lot of fun. On my boat, we ended up keeping 6 halibut including a 40lb, 30lb, and 29lb. We released 10 more. In the last hour, someone mentioned that it might be neat to go do something different and try for salmon so, on a whim, we changed gears and tried it. We ended up coming in with 6 salmon as well. That turned out to be a great idea!

It was a bit rough out there this trip. 6ft waves but we went out and caught some fish anyways. :) Well we brought in a 50lb, 36lb, & 26lb halibut as part of our catch. Not bad for a fairly rough day.

The group I had on my boat this trip had me in stitches before they even came out. I got the email and we set up the charter. When I asked her what kind of fish she was looking to focus on for the day she replied....

" As goes for species, we want anything we can't catch in the river so halibut, lings, red snapper anything that lurks at the bottom and eats gross stuff. The uglier the taster is what I hear. So lets go find us some ugly fish." - Quoted from email.

I was laughing for awhile with that one. They were extremely nice people that kept me laughing most of the day and we had a great time. Oh did I mention that we caught those ugly fish she wanted so badly? Another halibut over 100lbs! :) This one was 110lbs according to the chart but I think it may have actually been more since this one was so wide. I am having the luck this year with monster halibut! I love my job!

The last 3 days were so much fun. Mike was concerned about the trip and has been watching all season to see how our days were going. He has had some very odd experiences on charters in the past so I can see why he was a little worried. Well we had such a great time and had 3 awesome days of fishing. Day 1 we limited out on our salmon for the day. We also managed to catch 3 Halibut. I think Mike's fear was gone at this point. Day 2 was Halibut day where we managed to pull in a few more Halibut and some Lings and Rock Cod. Day 3 we went for Coho again and came in early as we had yet another awesome day with salmon, snapper, some more ling, and some more rocks. About the only thing that was disappointing for me was the crab. They weren't doing as well as I would have hoped. Also it was Mike and his group that came up with the idea for a recipes page on the site which is in the works and should appear shortly. Thanks for that Mike! Look forward to having you guys again!

I keep saying it: I have the best job in the world!

I can't believe that I forgot to tell one of the more amazing stories this summer. One of my guests reminded me of it in his email to me. It dates back to the blog entry from Aug 2, 2006. Check it out. Here is the email that explains it all. What a day that was.

Hi Mo

Good to hear from you again.

As for your blog -- well,I am really surprised that there was no mention made of the "lost fishing rod"!  I will never forget the expression on your face when that rod, fish & all, went overboard.  If only I had the camera instead of one of the ladies.  Even funnier was your expression when you got 'snagged' up on something while you were jigging (considerable time later), only to bring up that very same rod with the fish still attached!!  What are the odds?!?!?!?

Obviously Anita, Chuck, Pat and I enjoyed ourselves on our last trip & are looking forward to another.

Yep! How could I have forgotten to talk about that!

Til next season's blog for now. Be sure to watch for the new stories and the new photos which will be posted as often as I possibly can.
